Florida homeowner FAQ

How do I verify a contractor's license in Florida?

Search the name or license number on the DBPR license search at myfloridalicense.com. Make sure the license is current and matches the work, such as roofing or HVAC.

What is the Florida Homeowners' Construction Recovery Fund?

It is a state fund, administered by DBPR, that may compensate homeowners for certain financial losses caused by a licensed contractor. Hiring an unlicensed contractor means you are not covered.

How should I prepare my roof for hurricane season?

Have a licensed roofer inspect the roof before June 1, the start of hurricane season. Ask about roof-to-wall connections and secondary water barriers, which can also help with wind mitigation insurance discounts.

How often should I service my AC in Florida?

At least once a year, and many homeowners do it twice because AC runs most of the year. Keep the condensate line clear to prevent leaks and mold.

What should I watch for after a storm?

Be cautious with unlicensed contractors who show up after storms asking for large deposits. Always check DBPR licensing and get a written contract.
